Edit Color Settings Dialog Box

Set the colors used to color rows or cells in a property column in the Project Table panel.

To open this dialog box, choose Color by Property Value → Edit Settings from the Property shortcut menu in the Project Table panel. This dialog box opens automatically when you click OK in the Color Rows dialog box after selecting Color by property and choosing a property.

Edit Color Settings Dialog Box Features

The features displayed in this dialog box depend on the type of property: boolean, numeric (real or integer), or string. The name of the property is shown at the top of the dialog box.

Show colors in the Project Table option

Select this option to show the row or column coloring in the Project Table. The colors are displayed while this dialog box is open so you can view the effect of the coloring immediately while you are setting up the coloring.

Boolean property features

These features are displayed when the property is boolean. A boolean property can be represented by checkboxes in the property column. They are disabled when Show colors in the Project Table is not selected.

True option and color button

Select this option to apply colors when the value is True. Click the color square to choose a color.

False option and color button

Select this option to apply colors when the value is False. Click the color square to choose a color.

Unset option and color button

Select this option to apply colors when the property does not have a value. Click the color square to choose a color.

Numerical property features

These features are displayed when the property has a real value or an integer value. The coloring is done on the basis of a set of rules for the property values, which are constructed by using the rule definition features. You can add as many rules as you like.

Rule definition features

These features allow you to construct a color rule based on property values or ranges, or the presence or absence of property values.

Value condition option menu and text boxes

Choose the condition on the property values to apply this color rule, and set the property values that the rule applies to in the text boxes.

  • No value—color entries that do not have a value for the property.
  • Any value—color entries that have a value for the property, regardless of the value itself.
  • Values between—color entries that have values between those in the text boxes.
  • Values <—color entries that have values strictly less than the value specified in the text box
  • Values <=—color entries that have values less than or equal to the value specified in the text box
  • Values >—color entries that have values strictly greater than the value specified in the text box
  • Values >=—color entries that have values greater than or equal to the value specified in the text box
  • Exact value—color entries that have the value specified in the text box.

Colors are applied in the order in which they are specified in the list above. This means that a rule that is lower in the list takes precedence over a rule that is higher in the list. If there are multiple rules of the same type, they are applied in the order in which they appear in the set of rules, i.e. a rule that is lower down takes precedence over a rule that is higher up.

Property statistics button

Choose the property values in the text boxes from a set of statistics for the property. The button (down arrow) opens a menu showing the available statistical measures. If Values between is chosen from the option menu, you can choose the minimum and maximum or the mean plus or minus one standard deviation. When a single value is required, the mean and the median are also available as choices. The values of these statistics are shown below the rule definitions.

Color buttons

Click the color buttons to choose the color in a color selector. There are two buttons when Values between is chosen from the option menu and Interpolate in N steps is selected, otherwise there is only one button.

Delete rule button

Delete the color rule.

Single color option

Use a single color for values between the two specified property values. Only present when Values between is chosen from the option menu.

Interpolate in N steps option and text box

Partition the range of values equally into the specified number of sub-ranges (steps). The colors used for each step are interpolated linearly (in RGB space) between the two colors selected with the color buttons. The range of values between the two thresholds is partitioned into steps of the same size. Only present when Values between is chosen from the option menu.

This is a convenient way of "binning" the property values into bins of equal sizes, and applying a color ramp to the bins. If you want to bin the properties into bins of different sizes, use multiple rules with one of the inequality conditions. The precedence rules will take care of the overlap between the ranges.

Color below and above option

When interpolating colors, apply the color for the steps at the ends of the range to the values beyond the range. Only present when Values between is chosen from the option menu and Interpolate in N steps is selected.

Add Another Rule button

Add another set of rule definition features below the last one, so that another rule can be defined.

Statistics values

The values of the mean, median, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation of the property values are displayed here. These values can be used to set values for coloring by using the property statistics button.

From options

Select an option for the set of entries from which the statistics are calculated:

  • Selected entries—calculate the statistics for the selected entries. This is useful to narrow the range of values that are selected for coloring.
  • All entries—calculate the statistics from all entries.

String property features

These features are displayed when the property has a real value or an integer value. The coloring is done on the basis of a set of rules for the property values, which are constructed by using the rule definition features. You can add as many rules as you like.

Rule definition features

These features allow you to construct a color rule based on matches to property values, or the presence or absence of property values.

Text condition option menu and text box

Choose the condition for matching the property text to apply this color rule, and enter the text that the rule applies to in the text box. The matches to the text and the number of entries for each match are displayed below the text box as you type.

  • No text—color entries that do not have text for the property.
  • Any text—color entries that have text for the property, regardless of the text content.
  • Text does not contain—color entries whose text for the property does not contain the specified text.
  • Text contains—color entries whose text for the property contains the specified text.
  • Text is exactly—color entries whose text for the property matches the specified text exactly (no more, no less).

Match case option

Match the case of the text (case-sensitive match). If this option is not selected, the case is ignored (case-insensitive match).

Color button

Click to choose the color in a color selector.

Delete rule button

Delete the color rule.

Add Another Rule button

Add another set of rule definition features below the last one, so that another rule can be defined.

Stars property features

These features are displayed when the property is the Stars property. For each number of stars, there is a check box, set of star icons to indicate the number of stars, and a color square. Check the box for a particular number of stars to color rows that have that number of stars, and click the color square to change the color.
